|Seminar: Working with words: two approaches to textual analysis|
|Thursday, 13 May 2010|
The Researching Medical Learning and Practice Network is proud to
invite you to its third and final seminar for the academic year
2009-10. This seminar will focus on approaches to textual analysis in
This presentation will illustrate two methodologies using words to understand professionalism within medical education. One illustrates how a widely available popular technology, Tag Clouds, can be applied to medical education research, in particular how medical policy documents can be rapidly analysed to demonstrate a changing professional discourse over time. A second example, in the context of professional learning, involving both what we do but also who we are, explores Performative Narrative Analysis as a way of understanding meaning-making of professional identity within the context of undergraduate General Practice placements. In summarising these two diverse approaches, a comparison of the virtues of each approach will be made.
